du grec oikoumené : l’ensemble de la terre habitée

Désigne chez les chrétiens ce qui concerne l’ensemble des Églises chrétiennes. Le mot s’applique notamment aux relations entre les différentes confessions chrétiennes. On désigne couramment par « oecuménisme » l’ensemble des efforts visant à l’unité visible des Églises qu’a voulue le Christ.
